Development Associate

Position Summary

Mid Atlantic Arts seeks a mid-level and driven non-profit professional to serve as Development Associate. The Development Associate will report to and work in partnership with the Director of Development to bolster the organization’s development and fundraising efforts.  

The Development Associate assists in the execution of annual development and fundraising strategies and tasks in support of Mid Atlantic Art’s annual contributed income goals. The Development Associate will be part of a small Development Office of two employees. The Development Associate provides creative and administrative support to the Development Office for all fundraising activities, with primary responsibility for donor communications, database management, cultivation, solicitation and campaign support, and donor research. The Development Associate also assists with entry-level grant management, such as drafting interim and final reports for funders. This position is encouraged to think creatively to problem solve and advance the department.  

Responsibilities Include:

Administration and Gift Management 

  • Ensure that appropriate information is captured in Mid Atlantic’s databases regarding awards and rejections, reports, restrictions, and payment schedules. 
  • Manage Development Department deadline calendars and communicate with appropriate staff about specific deadlines and deliverables. 
  • Process weekly mail and record and reconcile received gifts with finance department. 
  • Generate timely acknowledgment letters and tax receipts for donors. 

Research and Fundraising 

  • Research individual, corporate, and foundation prospects and maintain an organized system for discovery and research.  
  • When appropriate and with the support of the Director of Development, draft interim or final reports for funders. 
  • Maintain accurate development files of all grant deliverables and communications. 
  • With support from the Director of Development, identify and solicit corporate support for specific programs, events, or initiatives. 

Marketing and Communications 

  • Assist with board communications and engagement efforts. 
  • Work closely with the marketing and communications department to develop social media and email solicitations and marketing materials that support fundraising efforts.  
  • Work with program staff to gather relevant updates, stories, photographs, and videos that can be shared with current donors. 
  • Assist with facilitating donor communications, including email and mail campaign solicitations and annual giving renewal letters.  
  • Draft text for communications, slide decks, marketing materials, invites, or other needs as requested. 
  • Layout/design PowerPoint presentations, slide decks, event invites, and other forms of communication. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or equivalent in work experience.  
  • 3-4 years of administrative experience, with progressive work in fundraising/development preferred. 
  • Intermediate experience in writing for marketing and solicitation needs.  
  • The following interpersonal skills are helpful:  teamwork, strong customer service, communication, problem-solving, flexibility, adaptability. 
  • Basic understanding of designing for marketing and donor communications with experience in designing powerpoints, slide decks, invites, etc.  
  • Intermediate proficiency using Microsoft products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).  
  • Video Conferencing:  Intermediate proficiency to conduct meetings and events via Zoom, Teams, or other video conferencing technology. 
  • Preferred but not required: Experience with CRM databases. Salesforce is a plus. Intermediate graphic design experience and familiarity with Canva, or Adobe Suite a plus.

The position is Hybrid/Remote. Candidates must reside in the Mid-Atlantic region. The region includes New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, District of Columbia, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Preference given to candidates in the DC/Baltimore area.
