Living Legacy Honoree
Award to be Presented October 7, 2016 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
Baltimore – May 16, 2016 – Bassist and educator Ron Carter will be honored with the BNY Mellon Jazz 2016 Living Legacy Award in a special ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, October 7, 2016. The Award is a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation and is sponsored by BNY Mellon, the global leader in investment management and investment servicing. The BNY Mellon Jazz Living Legacy Award honors living jazz masters from the mid-Atlantic region who have achieved distinction in jazz performance and education.
The 2016 event will include a gala reception in the Kennedy Center Atrium, the award ceremony, and a performance featuring the BNY Mellon Jazz 2015 Living Legacy awardee Gary Bartz in the Kennedy Center Jazz Club.

Ron Carter is among the most original, prolific, and influential bassists in jazz. With more than 2,000 albums to his credit, he has recorded with many of music’s greats including Tommy Flanagan, Gil Evans, Lena Horne, Bill Evans, B.B. King, the Kronos Quartet, Dexter Gordon, Wes Montgomery, and Bobby Timmons. In the early 1960s he performed with Jaki Byard and Eric Dolphy and later toured Europe with Cannonball Adderley. From 1963 to 1968, he was a member of the Miles Davis Quintet.
In 1993 Ron Carter earned a Grammy award for Best Jazz Instrumental Group, the Miles Davis Tribute Band and another Grammy in 1998 for Call ‘Sheet Blues’, an instrumental composition from the film ‘Round Midnight. In addition to scoring and arranging music for many films, including some projects for Public Broadcasting System, Carter has composed music for A Gathering of Old Men,The Passion of Beatrice, and Blind Faith. Carter shares his expertise in the series of books he authored, among which are Building Jazz Bass Lines and The Music of Ron Carter.
Mr. Carter has received two honorary doctorates and recently was honored by the French Minister of Culture with France’s premier cultural award–the medallion and title of Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters. Carter has lectured, conducted, and performed at clinics and master classes, instructing jazz ensembles and teaching the business of music at numerous universities. He was Artistic Director of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Studies while it was located in Boston and, after 18 years on the faculty of the Music Department of The City College of New York, he is now Distinguished Professor Emeritus although, as a performer, he remains as active as ever.
Previous BNY Mellon Living Legacy Award winners include Gary Bartz, Joanne Brackeen, Nathan Davis, Muhal Richard Abrams, Phil Woods, Roy Haynes, Dr. Frank Foster, Kenny Barron, Benny Golson, Oliver Lake, Rufus Reid, Randy Weston, Keter Betts, Jimmy Heath, Joe Kennedy, Jr., Shirley Scott, Reggie Workman, Dr. Donald Byrd, Larry Ridley, Barry Harris, Robert “Boysie” Lowery, and Clark Terry. A Millennium Award was conferred on Dr. Billy Taylor in 2000.
