French-American Jazz Projects Announced

Photo: Matthew Furman | Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, and FACE (French-American Cultural Exchange) have announced four grants, totaling $96,703, in support of the 2011-2012 French-American Jazz Exchange ("FAJE") program. FAJE is dedicated to furthering the creative and professional development of jazz artists from France and the United States through support for jointly conceived projects that foster the collaborative investigation of artistic practice and exposure to new audiences, music concepts, and professional relationships. Funded projects included:
- John Hébert (USA) with Benoit Delbecq (France)
- Keith Witty (USA) with Christophe Panzani (France)
- Somi (USA) with Ibrahim Maalouf (France)
- Tarbaby (USA) with Marc Ducret(France)

Phil Woods Receives BNY Mellon Jazz 2011 Living Legacy Award

Photo by Valerie Russell. | On Friday, October 14, 2011, master saxophonist Phil Woods was presented with the BNY Mellon Jazz 2011 Living Legacy Award at a spacial ceremony at the Kennedy Center. Guests enjoyed a concert with 2010 Legacy Awardee Roy Haynes and then adjourned to the KC Jazz Club for the 2011 ceremony and and gala reception. Mr. Woods was joined by family, many friends, and jazz afficianados from across the country.
Previous Living Legacy Award winners (from 2010-1994) include Roy Haynes, Dr. Frank Foster, Kenny Barron, Benny Golson, Oliver Lake, Rufus Reid, Randy Weston, Keter Betts, Jimmy Heath, Joe Kennedy, Jr., Shirley Scott, Reggie Workman, Dr. Donald Byrd, Larry Ridley, Barry Harris, Robert "Boysie" Lowery, and Clark Terry. A Millennium Award was conferred on Dr. Billy Taylor in 2000.

PA Presenters Meeting Fast Approaching
The PA Presenters Fall Booking Meeting will take place at the Atherton Hotel in State College, Pennsylvania on November 14- 15, 2011. The meeting will focus on building connections between mid-Atlantic presenters based on projects of mutual interest, including potential Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation ArtsCONNECT projects for the 2012-2013 season. Meeting highlights include a popular "Pitch Session" for presenters, artists, and agents; and a presenter-only session exploring block-booking opportunities. New Folk/Traditional Arts Fellowship Opportunity
Folk/Traditional Arts has been added as new category eligible for support through the New York Foundation for the Arts' individual artist fellowships program. Other categories offered for 2012 include Painting, Fiction, Interdisciplinary Work, and Film/Video. Fellowships are $7,000 cash awards made to individual artists living and working in the state of New York for unrestricted use.
