design at last year's Folk Arts Outreach Program.

From November 28 through
December 4, 2010
, the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts will host a Folk Arts Outreach Program on Saint Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Will to Adorn project will bring together artists from New York, Washington, D.C., and St. Croix to document and celebrate African-American adornment traditions. Artists Xenobia Bailey, Jade D. Banks, Nekhena Evans and Januwa Moja will travel to St. Croix to meet with local artists Bradley Christian, Raymond Galloway, and Petaunna Matthew. The project will include both private workshops for artist exchange and public presentations. Diana N'Diaye of the Smithsonian Institution will act as visiting folklorist for the project, which is a continuation of a prior exploration of the aesthetics of African-American identity as expressed in dress that took place on St. Thomas earlier this year.  Mid Atlantic Folk Arts Outreach Projects seek to further the exchange of expertise and best practices in the traditional arts throughout the region. To learn more about the program or propose a project, please click here or contact Sally Van de Water, Program Associate, Folk Arts at sally@midatlanticarts.org.
