The project will highlight a capella ballad singing, bringing together Elizabeth LaPrelle of Rural Retreat, Virginia and Colleen Cleveland of Brant Lake, New York. Cleveland is a fifth-generation ballad singer, custodian to an extraordinary song repertoire including Irish, Scottish and English ballads. LaPrelle, a generation younger than Colleen, sings old Appalachian mountain ballads native to her home in southwestern Virginia. During the exchange the two singers will share their regional ballad styles, participate in a local radio broadcast, conduct public workshops, and perform in concert. |
