The Mellon Jazz Living Legacy Award is given annually to a mid-Atlantic region jazz master who has had a distinguished performing career, made a special commitment to jazz education, and worked to impart his or her unique knowledge of the art of jazz to emerging young artists. This year the award was presented to jazz-great Oliver Lake in a ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on October 13.

PODCAST COMING SOON!

Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation kicks off its future in podcasting with an interview of awardee Oliver Lake conducted by jazz aficionado Willard Jenkins. Keep an eye on MAAF's homepage for notice on when the podcast will be available.

DC Artists Now Eligible!
Artists & Communities 2007-2008

Artists residing in the District of Columbia are now eligible for support through the Artists & Communities residency program. The opportunity for DC artists to participate was made possible through new funding from the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

Artists & Communities provides opportunities for professional artists who are residents of the District of Columbia, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania to partner with non-profit organizations in projects that result in the creation of new work and involve active cultural participation by members of the host community. Participating organizations must be located in the Foundation’s service area of Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The deadline for the program is December 4, 2006 for projects taking place between April 1, 2007 – March 31, 2008.

American Masterpieces

American Masterpieces provides support to performing arts presenters throughout the region that engage pre-selected companies for performances in their communities. Companies are selected to represent the best of American and the region's cultural heritage and legacy. This program celebrates the rich and extraordinary evolution of the arts in the United States.

For the 2007-2008 season, Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation is celebrating the legacies of three women artists whose contributions have transcended the companies they founded. Under the banner of Artistry & Influence: Joan Myers Brown, Martha Graham, Bernice Johnson Reagon, fee subsidy will be available for the tours of: PHILADANCO, Martha Graham Dance Company, and Sweet Honey in the Rock.

Support will be available to presenters in the mid-Atlantic region to offset performance fees. Preference will be given to organizations serving underserved communities.

For more information contact Krista Bradley, Program Officer, Performing Arts at (410) 539-6656 x110 or krista@midatlanticarts.org.

Mid Atlantic Tours

Mid Atlantic Tours (MAT) is a program through which the Foundation selects performing arts groups to tour to multiple venues in the region. These tours are targeted for special purposes such as focusing on specific art forms, supporting international cultural exchange, reaching presenters and communities that are underserved by MAAF programs, or other purposes. Each year the Foundation supports 5-10 touring companies through this program that reach as many as 50 mid-Atlantic communities.

During the 2007-2008 season, Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation will provide support for the presentation of the classic Aquila Theatre, 1999 National Heritage Fellow Mick Moloney, genre-bending jazz pianist Jason Moran & The Bandwagon, the renowned Morgan State University Choir, and acclaimed modern dance ensemble Taylor II.

Fee subsidy will be available to presenters for selected engagements in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, and West Virginia.

To determine availability of funding contact Krista Bradley, Program Officer, Performing Arts at (410) 539-6656 x110 or krista@midatlanticarts.org.
