The results are pieces that encourage the cross-pollination of audiences and harmony between uptown and downtown, professional and amateur, and high-brow and low-brow.  The company has performed throughout New York and at leading U.S. dance festivals including the American Dance Festival, the Bates Dance Festival, and Jacob’s Pillow. The company will offer repertory and evening-length works in the 2011-2012 season.

ROOTS/TRADITIONAL

Bettye Levett
Bettye LaVette
(New Jersey)

Grammy-nominated Betty LaVette is considered one of the greatest soul singers in American music.  With an expressive voice that can exude a formidable level of strength and intensity at one moment and appear vulnerable, reflective and reeking of heartbreak the next, her music and talents have received a resurgence of popularity after a four-decade career of relative anonymity.  LaVette was awarded a 2008 Blues Music Award for Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year, and was nominated again in 2010. In 2004 she won the Comeback Blues Album of the Year for A Woman Like Me. She recently released her newest CD, Interpretations - The British Rock Songbook to critical acclaim.
