American Masterpieces

Artist Selection Process

The Foundation selects artists for the American Masterpieces roster based on:

> Artistic excellence, as demonstrated by an artist's record of achievement and national critical recognition;

> Compatibility of the artist's work and genre with the American Masterpieces tour theme identified for a given year; and

> Strong artist representation and/or booking representation capable of identifying appropriate venues and maximizing available resources to fully realize the program’s goals of broad regional participation and access to high quality performing arts in underserved communities.

All artists selected for the American Masterpieces roster must be based in Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, or West Virginia.

Booking Guidelines

Presenters in Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, and West Virginia are eligible to receive fee support grants towards contracted artist fees (including artist travel),  and complementary activity fees, if not included in the artist fees.

Presenters based in the same state as a featured artist are ineligible for fee support. Exceptions may be made for artists and presenters based in New York State.  Presenters based in New York City; Nassau, Rockland, Suffolk or Westchester Counties are ineligible for fee support for any artist based in these areas but are eligible to receive fee support for any artist based in any other part of New York or outside the state.  New York presenters located outside of New York City; Nassau, Rockland, Suffolk or Westchester Counties are eligible to receive fee support for any artists based in these areas but are ineligible to receive fee support for artists based in any other part of New York State.

Supported engagements must include at least one complementary activity that builds appreciation for the performance, artist or the art form. Complementary activities may include, but are not limited to, lecture-demonstrations, open rehearsals, master classes, pre-or post-performance discussions and/or workshops.  While the Foundation encourages presenters to involve the featured artists in the planning and presentation of the complementary activity, it is not a funding requirement that the artist participate in the activity.  Presenters should discuss the complementary activity and the artist’s involvement with the artist's booking agent and include these activities in their negotiations.

Presenters reaching communities underserved by the arts will be given priority consideration for support. For the purposes of this program, an underserved community is one in which individuals lack access to arts programs due to geography, economic conditions, ethnic background, or disability.

Presenters interested in booking American Masterpieces roster artists and receiving fee support should contact the group's booking agent directly to negotiate terms of the engagement. There is no application process involved for American Masterpieces funding, but funds are limited, and fee support grants will be available “while supplies last.” Presenters are encouraged to pursue this opportunity and secure artist engagements as soon as possible.  Firm, written offers must be received and accepted by roster artist agents on or before March 1, 2012. Presenters will be notified in writing of official fee support grant approval in June 2012.

Presenters are limited to two American Masterpieces grants in a given year until further notice.

Funding for these tours is made possible with support from the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program.  Additional funding provided by the Delaware Division of the Arts, MarylandState Arts Council, and the West Virginia Division of Culture and History.
