Abington Art Center,
Jenkintown, PA
David Guinn, Philadelphia, PA
Abington Art Center collaborated
with Philadelphia muralist David Guinn to create a public
art mural in Willow Grove,
PA. The project will took place at a child care facility on
a main artery through the Crestmont community and 10 neighborhood
teen interns were trained to assist the artist.
AMD&ART,
Inc., Johnstown, PA
Stacy Levy, Spring Mill, PA
Stacy Levy and the community
of Vintondale, with AMD&ART, founder
T. Allan Comp and the Wildlife Habitat Council, developed,
designed and implemented a 7-acre wetland planting with
native, habitat rich materials
on abandoned mine land in Vintondale. These History Wetlands
are part of an AMD treatment system and Community Park,
an innovative interdisciplinary
project by AMD&ART.
Botto House Museum, Haledon, NJ
Karen Guancione, Belleville, NJ
Interdisciplinary artist Karen Guancione conducted
a residency at the American Labor Museum to explore issues
of ethnicity/immigration
in the lives of textile workers and the changing role
of women's work. She collaborated with a union of local
textile
workers of Latino heritage and installed her final piece
during Women's History Month at the Paterson Museum.
Center
for Exploratory and Perceptual Art, Buffalo, NY
Gary Cardot, Erie, PA
Gary Cardot engaged in a six-week CEPA residency
in which he investigated, through a photographic essay
with accompanying
texts, the contrasting yet profound sense of emptiness
and hope in "Rust-Belt" cities which have
suffered, yet survive, the oppression of industrial
closings, population
decline, suburban sprawl, and economic downturn.
Center
for Modern Dance Education, Inc., Hackensack, NJ Candace
Hundley-Kamate, South Orange, NJ
An eight-week residency
by choreographer Candace Hundley-Kamate at the Center for
Modern Dance Education, which created
an original, full-length dance piece that combined
traditional African dance and drumming with modern
dance. A mix
of professional dancers, dance students of varying
levels, and community
members, performed the piece.
Chester Springs Studio,
Chester Springs, PA
David McShane, Philadelphia, PA
Chester Springs Studio hosted Philadelphia
artist David McShane to create a mural, with city residents,
for
a neighborhood in Coatesville which is historically
African-American.
Community
engagement was encouraged through neighborhood "visioning" meetings,
a tour of Philadelphia murals, community painting
days, and a workshop for motivated youngsters.
Children's
Media Project, Poughkeepsie, NY
Helanna Bratman, Teaneck, NJ
I Live Here was a photography workshop empowering
youth to become advocates for progressive social change
through visual storytelling. The workshop, taught
in collaboration with the Children's Media Project
and an artist-in-residence
Helanna Bratman, taught both visual and written storytelling
to youth 10-18 in the city of Poughkeepsie, New York.
COSACOSA
art at large, Inc., Philadelphia, PA
Rana Sindhikara, Brick, NJ
COSACOSA brought new media artist Rana Sindhikara,
along with two other artists working from divergent
disciplines,
into residence at North Philadelphia's Nicetown-Tioga
neighborhood library for two months to create new
works with community
members. The project explored varying forms of story-telling
as means to discover, delineate and disseminate both
individual and community identity.
COSACOSA art at

Homer Jackson, Philadelphia, PA
COSACOSA brought audio/theater artist Homer
Jackson, along with two other artists working from

D.C.'s Different
Drummers, Washington, DC
Robert Maggio, Media, PA
D.C.'s Different Drummers and the Lesbian & Gay
Chorus of Washington created an original composition
for symphonic
band and SATB chorus to musically represent the
AIDS Memorial Quilt. The finished work was premiered
on World AIDS day,
2003.
Dance Institute of Washington, Washington,
DC
Lorenzo R. Harris, Philadelphia, PA
In a month-long collaboration with the Philadelphia-based
Rennie Harris Puremovement Dance Company, the
Dance Institute of Washington presented a series
of lecture
demonstrations
and intensive choreography and production workshops
to provide on-the-job training and career options
to youth
living in
low-income neighborhoods in Washington, D.C.
Delaware
Center for the Contemporary Arts, Wilmington, DE
Ava Blitz,
Wynnewood, PA
Ava Blitz worked with youths from the Fraim Branch
of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Delaware to create sculpture
using the natural landscape of the
Center's urban location. The resulting installations explored
how human interaction with nature affects the growth, decay
and renewal process.
Erie Art Museum, Erie, PA
Adrienne Heinrich, Murrysville, PA
Erie Art Museum hosted artist Adrienne Heinrich
in a residency aimed at developing capacity for community-based
projects
among local artists. She worked with inner-city children
on her Dreamship project, and conducted the Ripple Effect
project - working with local artists to facilitate their
own community-based projects.
Gloucester County Cultural
and Heritage Commission, Woodbury, NJ
Karen Stone, Philadelphia, PA
Visual artist Karen Stone collaborated with
senior citizens from Woodbury, NJ gathering raw materials
chronicling
life through interactive workshops on journalizing,
and visual
diaries. The project culminated with Windows
to the Soul, an installation examining issues
of aging, contrasting workshop artifacts with thousands
of discarded
shoe-parts,
digital imagery and text.
La Casa de Don Pedro, Newark,
NJ
Caryl Henry, Somerset, NJ
Building Bridges--Crossing Cultures was a
community art project that facilitated communication
between
two Community
Development Corporations in Newark, NJ and artist
Caryl Henry. This six-month project was conceived-designed-produced
by a diverse group of residents and stakeholders,
resulting
in the creation of 65 hand-painted double-sided banners.
Lesbian
and Gay Community Services Center, New York, NY
Barbara Bickart, Jersey City, NJ
Video artist, Barbara Bickart, facilitated
workshops for a group of youth from the Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual & Transgender
Community Center during a residency where she also
mentored individuals to produce and edit their own
video self-portraits.
The final work comprised a 60-minute experimental
documentary, I Look Up to the Sky Now
Paterson YMCA,
Paterson, NJ
Renato Alarcao, Newark, NJ
This YMCA program exposed more than 100 children
to several art disciplines. Through photography,
papermaking,
bookbinding
and collage, children created individual visual
diaries and saw how art, as part of their lives,
can provide
an outlet for self-expression.
Philadelphia
Art Alliance, Philadelphia, PA
Doris Nogueira-Rogers, Woodbury, NJ
Urban Sanctuaries was a collaborative exhibition project
between the Philadelphia Art Alliance and Taller Puertorriqueno
that sought to address urban blight through the creation of
new works of art that
rethink the "sanctuary" in a non-religious context. This project
explored how art can help combat urban blight by transforming
vacant lots and imaginatively re-envisioning urban space.
Pyramid
Atlantic, Riverdale, MD
Teresa Jaynes, Philadelphia, PA
Pyramid Atlantic invited Philadelphia artist Teresa Jaynes to its
community to work with the community of students and public
participants at Watkins
Regional Park in Prince George's County to create an outdoor
installation project. In addition, the artist worked in Pyramid
Atlantic's print and
paper workshop to create a limited edition art book. She also
presented workshop sessions and a public lecture at the center.
Quest:
arts for everyone, Lanham, MD
Mike Lamitola, Morrisville, PA
Quest: arts for everyone and Gallaudet University invited actor
and director, Mike Lamitola to conduct master classes in physical
theatre for artists
attending the Deaf Way II Artists' Symposium and workshops
for students in the Washington area. Mr. Lamitola also directed
a new physical theatre
piece featuring deaf and hard of hearing performers.
Reichhold
Center for the Arts, St. Thomas, VI
Anula Shetty, Philadelphia, PA
The project was an intensive seven-week workshop for youths ages
13 to 21. It aimed to teach the skills of operating a digital
movie camera, conducting non-linear editing using computers and industry
standard software
programs, and story-telling using film techniques. As a final
project, participants collectively produced a short movie.
Rutgers-Camden
Center for the Arts, Camden, NJ
Janet Taylor Pickett, Montclair, NJ
Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts, in partnership with the Camden
Neighborhood Renaissance and Camden County Cultural and Heritage Commission,
hosted
artist Janet Taylor Pickett in a residency with residents
of the Cramer Hill neighborhood of Camden, New Jersey to transform an empty
lot into
a community sculpture garden.
Society for Contemporary Craft,
Pittsburgh, PA
Maxwell Kofi Donkor, East Stroudsburg, PA
The Society for Contemporary Crafts' Artists and Kids program is
an ongoing program facilitating access to the arts in Pittsburgh's
urban neighborhoods.
In 2002, the program partnered Philadelphia sculptor and drummer
Maxwell Kofi Donkor with Pittsburgh's East Liberty neighborhood
in a one-month residency to work with 15 at-risk students and 12 non-arts
educators.
Srishti Dances of India, Pittsburgh, PA
Charu Collur, Monroeville, PA
Indian classical vocalist Charu Collur collaborated with Srishti
Dances of India to compose new musical pieces in the Hindustani
style to accompany
Srishti's expanding dance repertoire. She was the principal
vocalist in Srishti's musical ensemble (5-8 musicians) consisting
primarily of artists
drawn from the Indian community in Pittsburgh.
St. Paul's
Community Development Corporation, Paterson, NJ
Michael Cochrane,
Paterson, NJ
St. Paul's CDC seeks to create a regional forum for advancement
of jazz in the underserved Paterson area. Resident artist Michael
Cochrane conducted
free workshops for young musicians, ages 8-18, and a Composer's
Workshop, concerts, and jam sessions. A CD recording of the
artist's original works
was also produced.
Tabernacle United Church Arts & Spirituality
Center, Philadelphia, PA
Lynn Denton, Philadelphia, PA
This project was a collaboration between artist Lynn Denton, New
Jerusalem Now, video maker Sloan Seale, and the Arts and Spirituality
Center. With
help from members of the community, they created an environment
which included an outdoor gathering place, sculptural elements,
and a video portrait of Jerusalem Now and its surrounding neighborhood.
The Newark Museum Association, Newark, NJ
E.B. Lewis, Folsom, NJ
The Newark Museum retained E.B. Lewis, award winning illustrator
of children's books, for a residency program in which at risk high school
students created
their own personally illustrated books. In addition to working
intensively with the students, Mr. Lewis conducted a series of family programs
at
the Museum, based on the theme of storytelling and book making.
The project culminated with an exhibition of students' work that traveled
to Children's
Hospital at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.

for Women and Families, Inc., Allentown, PA

BIRTHmarks: A Mother's Quilt--2002 was designed
to promote the positive reunification of women transitioning
out
of the criminal justice system with their children. It
was
also designed to introduce this socially disadvantaged
population to art as a cultural resource and as a healthy
outlet to
express powerful emotions. |
