1999 Projects (Artist as Catalyst, New Jersey Exchange)

Support was available for residencies in which either the artist, the host organization, or both, were located in New Jersey. Eligible host organizations in the mid-Atlantic region could apply for residencies with New Jersey artists. Eligible New Jersey host organizations could apply for residencies with artists based anywhere in the mid-Atlantic region. Residencies occurred between June 1, 1999 and March 31, 2000.

Arts Council of the Essex Area, Montclair, NJ
Manuel Acevedo, Newark, NJ
The artist created a photographic portrait of Newark as a dynamic and evolving entity, in active collaboration with residents from diverse cultures and communities.

Botto House American Labor Museum, Haledon, NJ
Meyer Alewitz, New Brunswick, NJ
Alewitz led teams of workers and students in creating murals celebrating a variety of American labor skills and traditions.

Dance Theater Workshop, Inc., New York, NY
Barbara Bickart, Jersey City, NJ
Artist Barbara Bickart worked with gay at-risk youth as part of her ongoing video production and performance residency, School's OUT: The Naming Project, a component of DTW's Public Imaginations community program.

Glassboro Center for the Arts, Glassboro, NJ
Paule Turner, Philadelphia, PA
Choreographer Paule Turner was provided studio space and other resources to create, rehearse, and perform a new dance work. He also conducted residency activities with minority youth in the community.

Musician's Accord, New York, NY
Amy Rubin, Chester, NJ
Amy Rubin, composer, joined a team of artists to compose and perform original works for the youth and community, creating a choral work and a composition for dance..

The Summer Arts Institute annually brings a diverse group of students together with professional artists to experiment and create in the visual arts, drama, creative writing, and film/video workshops. Together, they developed a performance and installation piece.

Madison Avenue School PTA, Irvington, NJ
Yewande Kelley-Johnson, Irvington, NJ
Ms. Kelley-Johnson taught a West African traditional dance to students at Madison Avenue Elementary School. Through this dance an Anansi story is told. This dance was performed for the community at Kwanzaa, the traditional winter celebration.

Middlesex Co. Regional Council for the Arts, New Brunswick, NJ
Don Kennell, New Brunswick, NJ
Artist Don Kennell worked with students and community participants at six regional high schools throughout Middlesex County creating permanent public sculptures.

Myhelan Cultural Arts Alliance, Inc., Long Valley, NJ

The artist and the host organization used this participatory residency as the creative vehicle through which this community reflected upon its past, and explored its future, creating a series of mixed-media events and art works.

Artscapes: Home at Last! was a residency with lead artist, Caryl Henry, working with local artists, youth, and residents in the development of artworks installed in and around the courtyard of a 120 unit apartment building.

In collaboration with the Latino Center for Arts & Culture, RCIPP hosted writers Anreus and Torruella Leval as they examined ways to place Latino/a and Latin American artists at the center of the cultural mainstream discourse.

Women Against Abuse, Inc., Philadelphia, PA

Stories to Praise and Raise engaged the support of an artist skilled in storytelling to effect positive change in the lives of women who have been subjected to domestic violence. Staff, mothers, children and the public recognized, appreciated and explored the ancient art of storytelling as a creative solution to abuse.

Miriam Beerman, Montclair, NJ
Miriam Beerman created an artist's book using WSW intaglio and letterpress facilities. Beerman is an advanced career artist of national and regional standing.
