Artist Support, Projects and Residencies

Artist Support, Projects and Residencies programs contribute to a thriving, stable and supportive environment for artists in the mid-Atlantic region.

Programs include:

  • Artists & Communities and its predecessor residency programs have been signature initiatives of MAAF for many years.  While MAAF remains firmly committed to supporting the creative artist and the profound experiences that result from the interaction of artists and individuals, the Artists & Communities program will not be offered in 2010-2011.  Over the next year, MAAF will investigate new approaches to realizing its goals of fostering the development of individual artists and engaging the public in the creative process.
  • French-American Jazz Exchange: fosters the development of jazz artists from France and the United States through the support of jointly conceived projects that encourage artistic exploration, provide exposure to new audiences, and initiate new and strengthen existing professional relationships between artists from the participating countries.
  • Mid Atlantic Creative Fellowships are offered annually to two artists from each of MAAF’s member states for residencies at artist retreat centers or other  artist-focused organizations that are able to provide the special facilities or equipment necessary to create new work and explore new ideas and concepts.
  • The Living Legacy Jazz Award is given annually to a mid-Atlantic region jazz master who has had a distinguished performing career, made a special commitment to jazz education, and worked to impart his or her unique knowledge of the art of jazz to emerging young artists.  A cash award is presented in a ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
  • State Fellowships Administration. The Foundation provides administrative services for individual artist fellowship programs for the states of Delaware, Maryland, and New Jersey.  Foundation staff convenes panels that review almost 1,000 applications annually.  The states participating in this partnership annually award over $500,000 to the fellowship winners.
